Correction: It's illegal to have a ROM you downloaded. You can rip the ROM from the cart itself if you own it, which is legal, but you can never download a ROM legally.

Dunno where that rumor got started, but it's completely false. I've heard it at some ROM sites, most notably Cult of Kefka, which is now closed, but it's never been legal to just demo a rom for 24 hours.

Yes, that's what's officially legal. However, I think you could win a trial if you do own the game, because you have licensed it already, and have paid for the rights to use the intellectual property. This is a complex situation, I guess lawyers will know better what's possible and what's not, but then again, lawyers can make a trial on Adobe to make them say "Black is white" in their products and have the Adobe CEO lick their balls for no reason, and they will win it, because trials are about how much you can pay to demagogic lawyers.

As for the 24 hours thing, yeah, it's illegal; it's like saying you can legally rob a bank as long as you give all the money back within 24 hours.

It's funny because yes, you may legally rip the rom on to your PC but the hardware to do so is not legal.

That R*AA is definitely bullshit, and I'd be cautious when mentioning it, well, I don't have that much to worry because I'm not from the US, but still, it's better to censor than to get in trouble. They are worse than maffia, you never know what they may do, even if all you did is speaking the truth about these SoBs. They have robots searching Google for stuff. BTW, R*AA ~= AOL. Oh and finally, the R*AA never paid a buck to any musician ever, they only want money for themselves, without doing anything (being a lawyer is rarely a honorable work). Lawyer companies like R*AA, SCO, etc. suck big, greasy penises.

After the R1AA BS, where they sued a 12 year old girl and her mother for 2000+dollar for downloading old TV show theme songs, such as Full House's theme song, I'd expect anything from a big company now.
